Babassu (Orbignya oleifera) is a large palm tree native to Brazil found in the Cerrado region producing at least 2 000 fruits annually. The fruit is round and brownish and when ripe it falls to the ground. Its seeds are oily containing about 65% oil which has significant economic potential. Every part of the palm is useful; its leaves are used for roofing and its fibers are crafted into handmade items like baskets and screens.
The Babassu oil extracted from the fruit seeds is rich in lauric acid and serves as an excellent emollient making it a great alternative to coconut oil.
